Top Emerging Documentary & Wedding Photographers for 2017

What an incredible day…I’m feeling pretty happy and humbled after waking up here in Perth to the news that I’ve been awarded Third Place Overall in the Capture Magazines Annual Top Emerging Photographers for 2017!! I’m so honoured to be recognised as one of Australia and Perth’s Top Emerging Documentary & Wedding Photographers for 2017, I’m still pinching myself.

Paul Alsop was the Overall Winner with a series of remarkable portraits. The portraits he produced are technically outstanding and he has given special care and attention to his subjects to capture a series that is timeless and honest. Jan Breckwoldt was Runner-up Overall and Winner of the Architecture Category with just one point separating us in the end!!

I ended up taking out First Place in the Documentary category for my images that I recently shot while exploring the local communities and mine sites in West Papua. It was an incredible adventure exploring a part of the world that is not accessible to most people and such a privilege to spend time with some of the West Papuan and Indonesian people.

A massive shout out has to go to my father in law Fred for inviting me over to Tembagapura and for looking out for me while on the ground. Not only did I have a great time wandering about shooting most of the day, but also getting to know you better and forming a strong relationship was something that I’ll always treasure.

Something else that is also very exciting was that I was awarded Third Place in the Wedding Category. You were able to enter each category more than once, so I entered twice into both the Wedding Photography and Documentary Photography categories and finished with both entries in the top ten!! It was great to see that I finished third in the wedding category to Runner Up and my extremely talented friend, Western Australian Photographer Kate Drennan. Congratulations Kate, your work is always mind blowing and I’m so stoked for you.

Queensland Photographer, Morgan Roberts took out 1^st place with his stunning portfolio of images and was a much deserved winner, can’t wait to meet up with you guys one day for a celebratory drink or two.

The last category I entered was travel and although I wasn’t in the top three, I am really proud that I managed to finish Fourth overall & in the Top Ten twice.

Congratulations to everyone who entered the awards and especially to the Category winners and Top Ten of each. It takes a lot of courage and time to put your work out there to be judged in these competitions, being involved in the photography community is what it’s all about and something that will help you to continually improve your craft.

Thank you also to all the judges and sponsors for taking the time to give honest and constructive feedback about our entered images, this competition wouldn’t be possible without you. To all the inspiring and friendly people at Capture Magazine who continue to organise this amazing competition each year, thank you so much.

Last but definitely not least, I’d like to thank my wonderful Wife Courtney for all of her love, support and patience while I continue my journey in Photography. I couldn’t have done this without your encouragement and constant belief in me, even when I don’t believe in myself. This year has already been incredibly special for us both as we will soon be parents…yikes…but I know together, we will be able to provide such a loving, happy and positive home for our little girl when she arrives very soon. I can’t wait to see what happens next in this whirlwind life we live!!
